Vulnerable Road Users

Aims and Objectives

• To raise candidate’s awareness of why some road users are more vulnerable
• To help candidates understand how to share the road safely with vulnerable road users
• Identify who are the most vulnerable roads users?
• Implement the best practices to apply
• Discuss legal requirements applying to LGV/PCV drivers
• Identify and discuss issues surrounding vehicle blind spots and how to minimise them
• Use vehicle safety equipment correctly

Course Content:

• Who are the VRUs/What risks do we present to them?
• Sharing road space/Route planning/New traffic systems
• The role of the professional driver/Using the roads correctly
• Hazard perception
• Defensive driving techniques and skills
• Vehicle safety systems

Course Summary

The seven-hour module is aimed at making bus and lorry drivers aware of the dangers presented to other road. The most vulnerable road users are pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders. It is particularly important to be aware of children, older and disabled people, and learner and inexperienced drivers and riders. This module aims to ensure professional drivers are fully aware of the hazards vulnerable road users pose.
